PAGE – The Sand Devils volleyball team advanced to the first round of the state tournament after winning a play-in game last Tuesday against the Safford Bulldogs.
They played Blue Ridge in the first round of the state tournament Friday at 3 p.m. and won by a score of 3-1.
They played the second round of the tournament at 7 p.m. the same day against Valley Christian and lost 3-0, 25-12, 25-10 and 25-10.
Torrance Begay, Zhanna Edwards, and Francine Keyonnie were selected as 3A North First Region players. Rainy Hoskie and Diana Secody were selected as 3A North Second Region players and Emma Yazzie was named Offensive Player of the Year.
It’s also worth noting that Nov. 11 was the last home game coached by longtime volleyball coach Misty Smith. She co-coached with Danielle Chee this year. Chee will take over as head coach next year.
Smith said she’s leaving so she can spend more time with her family.
“I missed a lot of my son’s games this year,” she said. “He’ll be a senior next year and I don’t want to miss his games next year.”
