A new hiring policy at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Rainbow Bridge National Monument will prioritize exclusively hiring locals for eligible positions.
Applicants who live within 30 miles of the park service’s duty locations in the two federal areas will be eligible to receive preferential hiring for a number of open positions. In Arizona, these locations include Page and Lee’s Ferry. Eligible Utah communities are Dangling Rope, Bullfrog, Halls Crossing, Hite and Escalante.
Park service earned the authority after special requests were made to the United States Office of Personnel Management. Park service leaders commended the efforts of Coconino County Commissioner Lena Fowler, who advocated and worked with NPS to secure the authorization

“Economic development, with an emphasis on generating jobs, is a current and growing priority among all organizations in Coconino County,” Fowler stated in a press release. “[I] am glad to hear the decision has been made to grant this special hiring authority.”
Fowler represents District 5, which includes Tuba City and Page.
According to park service, local residents near any of these areas will not be competing with national applicants for eligible positions.
The jobs available within the pool are primarily technical, maintenance and clerical occupations at or below GS-7 or WG-10 pay grades. Park service will require all applicants to live at a permanent residence within 30 miles of their location of interest, and indicate they have been a resident for at least two years.
William Shott, Glen Canyon superintendent, commented, “This is a win-win for both the park and for our local gateway communities. We’ll be able to increase the representation of local communities among the staff of the National Park Service. We’ll also retain employees that already have housing and are not affected by any unaffordable housing shortages.”
