Lake Powell Fish Report for July 6

Lake Elevation: 3,539 ; Water temperature: 75-81 degrees Fahrenheit

Last week we duplicated the successful striper slurping trip reported last month. The first surface feeding striper school we saw was about a quarter mile uplake from where we started last month, just past the massive rock fall in the main channel near the mouth of Warm Creek. The difference was that the striper school only came up one time. Last month, we would see the school feeding on the surface, quickly get in range and then cast to the school when the fish surfaced the second time. This time, the school only came up one time. So, we continued uplake.

Slurping stripers were visible in the main channel from Warm Creek to Rock Creek. These schools came up quickly and then went back down before we could get in casting range. Near Friendship Cove, we changed to trolling where we saw surface feeding striper schools. The first striper was caught on a rattletrap trolled behind the boat in 45 feet of water in the main channel.

We tried main Rock Creek next and found a few striper schools that would come up the second time. When the school was in range, we usually caught one striper while casting toward the surface feeding school. We did not catch as many stripers as we did the week before, but it was still fun to see surface-feeding fish and cast while they were feeding on the surface, then trolling after they went down. We caught stripers on rattletraps, medium diving crankbaits and spoons. The best spoon was a silver Kastmaster, which could be cast a long distance to a surface-feeding school. If the school was on top, a spoon cast beyond the surface-feeding fish and quickly reeled through the school worked well. If the school was under the boat, a Kastmaster dropped down to the school at 40 feet and jigged through the school was very effective. Most of the stripers caught this trip were hooked on the medium-sized silver Kastmaster.

On the return trip down lake, we saw a few slurping schools until boat traffic picked up and the main channel became too bumpy for surface action. We bounced across the big waves all the way back to Wahweap. We were pleased to see one more striper school surface in the wakeless area near the houseboat field at Wahweap marina. We caught one more striper on a Kastmaster spoon in the wakeless area near the marina.

Striper boil season is about a month away. Shad have to grow larger than the three-quarter-inch length that we saw in striper stomachs on this trip. Please report boiling activity when encountered and post it on Wayneswords.net in the fishing forum.

I am going on vacation to Canada during July and will not be able to post Lake Powell fish reports during July. I will resume posting fish reports in August after I return to my home lake. Thanks for reading these reports. Now if you find good fishing at Lake Powell in the coming days, please share that information with arriving anglers as you depart so they can enjoy the great fishing that this lake has to offer.
