The Lady Sand Devils opened the 2017-18 season with a home game against the Monument Valley Mustangs. They returned to the court with several players who played in last year’s championship game.

The Mustangs scored first but the Lady Sand Devils answered right back. The Mustangs continued to stay two to four points ahead of the Sand Devils until the three minute mark in the first quarter.

The Sand Devils took the lead after a scoring sequence from Amy Yellowman and Ashlyn Adakai. By the end of the first quarter they led 17-12, and they improved upon that lead during the second quarter going into halftime with a 37-29 advantage.

But the Sand Devils’ offense went cold in the third quarter and never got hot again. They scored only four points in the third quarter. Meanwhile the Mustangs offense steadily chipped away at the Sand Devils’ lead and eventually retook the lead with 1:11 left in the third quarter.

The Lady Sand Devils offense scored just ten points in the fourth quarter while the Mustangs added 14. The Mustangs won 58-51.

The Sand Devils next play the Chinle Wildcats in Chinle this Tuesday night.
