The condition of Amelia Olson is improving. Olson was the victim of a hit-and-run two weeks ago which left her with three broken ribs, two broken clavicles and a severe concussion. After first being treated at the Page hospital, she was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, which specializes in brain trauma.According to Olson’s grandma, Diane Schuler, Olson’s health is improving and she’s healing. During the week Olson temporarily lost some vision and some loss of her color vision. According to Schuler her vision is back but the loss of color vision may be ongoing, at least for a while.
Due to the concussion and head injury Olson is also experiencing occasional headaches and earaches, said Schuler.
Olson had been on medication to help her sleep but she’s off that now and just taking Tylenol as a pain management regimen.
Olson will remain in Primary Children’s Hospital for about another week while she undergoes more physical therapy, as well as some therapy to help her deal with the emotional distress caused by the accident.
“For what happened to her she’s doing great,” said Schuler. “Our initial concern was with her brain but it now looks like that will be okay too.”
Page Police are investigating the incident.
Some concerned Page residents and businesses have joined together and organized a fundraising event to help pay for some of Olson’s medical expenses. The fundraiser is this Saturday from noon until 5 p.m. at the Page Community Center. It will include a bake sale, silent auction and a meal of pulled pork, beans and potato salad. Items are still needed for the silent auction.
The fundraiser was organized by Shelley Johnstone. “I just woke up one morning and decided to do a fundraiser,” she said.
If you want to donate an item for the silent auction or if you want to volunteer to set up, serve or clean up contact Johnstone at 928-640-6898.
The money from the businesses will be used to buy food for this weekend’s fundraiser. Contributors include Big John’s Texas Barbecue, Lake Powell Ford, Windy Mesa, Red Rock Motel, Double R Collision, Lake Powell Furniture, B&L Automotive, Lake Powell Marine, NAPA, Page Car Sales and Ted’s Marine Supply.
