A 14-year-old girl from San Jose, California died Monday afternoon after falling off the edge at Horseshoe Bend, Coconino County Sheriff's officials reported.
The girl’s family seemed unaware that she had fallen off the edge. On Monday afternoon they reported to authorities that their daughter had been missing for about two hours.
An Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter later spotted the girl's body at the base of the Horseshoe Bend overlook.
Due to approaching darkness, authorities postponed recovering the body until Tuesday morning.
Her body was transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office in Flagstaff.
Authorities believe the fall was an accident but the incident remains under investigation.
