Page High students pledged to stop using the “R word” last Wednesday as part of an awareness campaign sponsored by the Special Olympics. The campaign accompanies a host of newly adopted special education programs by Page High School this year.

The campaign, according to its website, “asks people to pledge to stop saying the R-word (retarded) as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people. Language affects attitudes and attitudes affect actions. “

Special education teacher and coordinator of the campaign, Valerie Campbell, alongside Page Special Olympics Coach Damian Rosas, handed out bracelets and stickers to those who pledged their promises with a signature.
