Sand Devils split with Chinle

Modified: Sunday, Feb 2nd, 2014

Page High's Jamaal Thomas gets back on defense as Chinle brings the ball upcourt in the Wildcats' win over the Sand Devils.
Both Page High basketball teams faced top-ten opponents when the Chinle Wildcats came calling Feb. 1, with the Lady Sand Devils efficiently dispatching the visitors, 53-43, while the boys hung tough for three quarters against the state’s top team in Division III before losing 66-48.

With two games left in the regular season, the Lady Sand Devils (18-7) are ranked fifth and appear headed for a high seed in the state tournament. They are top-ranked in Section 3.

The boys, meanwhile, seem to be well positioned to qualify for the tournament. As of Feb. 2, they were ranked 17th in the division and third in the section.

The teams travel to Chinle Feb. 4, then finish at home against low-ranked Hopi on Feb. 7.

The boys sectional is scheduled to begin Feb. 11; the girls Feb. 12.

The 24-team state tournament includes winners of the six Division III sectional tournaments and the 18 next highest-ranked teams.
