PUSD may take over city recreation program

Posted: Wednesday, Nov 20th, 2013

Youth soccer is a popular sport in the city's recreation program.

The community pool housed inside Page High School could be dismantled in favor of building an outdoor facility, according to preliminary discussions between the school district and city.

At an informal meeting held Nov. 14 in Mayor Bill Diak’s office, several officials brainstormed ideas for dealing with the city’s recreation program, which City Manager Rick Olson says is losing money.

It was the second meeting between representatives from the city and Page Unified School District, both of which are operating under tight budgets.

Discussions centered on whether PUSD can take over responsibility for running the recreation programs.

“It’s an opportunity to work together to find a solution… that is to both our benefit,” said Superintendent Jim Walker, who represented PUSD at the meeting along with school board member Adrien Snell. “We serve the same customers: kids and their families. In a small community like this, it has to be a priority.”
