Newly opened memorial defaced

Posted: Wednesday, Nov 20th, 2013

Page Mayor Bill Diak pauses to contemplate names on the Memorial Wall while surveying damage done to the monument.

Just one week after Mayor Bill Diak held a soft opening ceremony for the Page Memorial Wall in front of City Hall, it has been defaced and damaged.

Skateboarders who clearly lack any sense of respect for what the wall stands for, stained the concrete benches with wax, which apparently makes it easier to do various tricks, and chunks of concrete were also chipped out of the benches.

The group of skaters also damaged the handrails of the stairs, and various transfer paint marks from the skateboard decks can be seen all over the memorial.

ďItís bothersome and I am very disappointed. I am very very strong on my patriotism and what I feel for my community. You try to build something nice and it has been abused. Itís not a skate park, itís something we are trying to do to recognize people who are heroes,Ē Diak said, who served in the Air Force where he worked on intercontinental ballistic missiles and space programs.
