Sand Devils playoff hopes still alive despite loss

Modified: Monday, Nov 4th, 2013

Running back Michael Yates Bauer is tackled after a short gain during the Sand Devils' 45-0 loss to visiting Winslow.
UPDATE: The Page High Sand Devils will travel to Mohave Valley Nov. 9 to play River Valley High School in the first round of the Division IV state playoffs, the Arizona Interscholastic Association announced Saturday morning.

ORIGINAL STORY: Page High’s 45-0 loss to visiting Winslow Nov. 1 kept the Sand Devils from winning the Division IV Section 1 championship, but they’ll probably still make the state playoffs as an at-large team, head coach Jeff Wheatley said after the game.

Sixteen teams make the playoffs—five section champions and the 11 highest-ranked teams among those remaining. Page was ranked 12th going into the game against seventh-ranked Winslow.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association’s rankings are based in large part on the strength of a team’s opponents, so a loss to the tough Bulldogs shouldn’t cost the Sand Devils too much.

The final rankings and playoff brackets will be posted online Nov. 2 during the “AZPreps365 Football Bracket Show,” which can be seen live beginning at 9 a.m. on www.aia365.com.

Check out the Nov. 6 edition of the Chronicle for more on the game and the Sand Devils’ potential playoff berth.
