(UPDATED Oct. 23 with Tourism Board action and further details)

Powell Museum officials plan to ask the city to help fund an expansion they say is needed to accommodate the “unexpected crush” of visitors that occurred when the Page Tourism Board turned over its visitor information services to the museum last year.

A proposal, which describes two options, was presented Oct. 22 to the Tourism Board, which formed a committee to look into the matter.

The preferred option, according to the proposal, is leasing space in the former Basha’s shopping center near the intersection of U.S. 89 and S. Lake Powell Boulevard. The mostly abandoned center is anchored by Page Lumber, and includes the Mandarin Gourmet and Subway restaurants. The space Museum officials are looking is near the Subway, where Sears used to be.

That location would be in addition to the current building, which would remain in place no matter which option is chosen.

The second option is expanding the museum’s current building toward Lake Powell Boulevard.
