Body found in lake this week could be from 2007 accident

Posted: Thursday, Sep 12th, 2013

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and National Park Service on Sept. 11 recovered a dead body floating in the Lake Canyon area of Lake Powell, officials said.

Recreational boaters spotted the decomposed body around noon a few miles north of Hall’s Crossing and reported it to NPS, according to the sheriff's Facebook page.

At this time there is no evidence of foul play, it said.

On Sept. 28, 2007, a Colorado couple was killed when a overhanging rock fell on them as they fished from their pontoon boat. The body of Mary Simmons, was recovered, but not that of Donald Simmons.

Authorities said the body found this week could be his.

The Utah Medical Examiner’s Office in Salt Lake City will conduct an autopsy and attempt to identify the body.
