Sand Devils gored in home opener

Modified: Saturday, Sep 7th, 2013

Sand Devils quarterback Andrew Runyan tries to retrieve an errant snap, but the Payson High Longhorns recovered the ball and drove 57 yards for their first touchdown on the way to a 42-10 win.
The dominating defense that Page High used to smother Tuba City in its season-opening win was repeatedly gouged by the Payson High Longhorns, who spoiled the Sand Devils’ home opener with a 42-10 win Sept. 6

Longhorns’ quarterback Miguel Mendoza connected with wide receiver Tyus Sarnowski for three touchdowns in the first half and another in the third quarter. Mendoza ran for Payson’s other two scores.

Page had problems holding on to the ball, fumbling three times in the first quarter. Another fumble , which Payson returned for a touchdown, was nullified by a penalty on the Longhorns.

Down 28-0 with 1:25 left in the second quarter, the Sand Devils got a long kickoff return from Michael Yates, who ran it back to the Payson 28. The offense, however, couldn’t move the ball and the Devils settled for Xavier Ochoa’s 42-yard field goal on the last play before halftime.

Page’s only touchdown was a 52-yard run by Jason Moore with 10:43 left in the game. Ochoa’s extra point made it 42-10.

The Sand Devils are on the road Sept. 11 to play Sedona Red Rock.
