Modified: Friday, Jul 26th, 2013

Lightning struck the rock wall at LeFevre Overlook July 23. Officials say one or both victims were standing on the rock seat beneath it.

(UPDATED July 26 with names of victims)

A married couple from Thailand were killed July 23 after being struck by lightning at the LeFevre Scenic Overlook on U.S. 89A north of Jacob Lake, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.

The victims were identified July 26 as Aram Kawewong, 20, and his wife, Ratchaya Tantranon. Both were 20 years old and were from Chiang-Mai, Thailand, according to CCSO's Gerry Blair. The sheriff's office had withheld the names until the Thailand Embassy confirmed that the couple's next of kin had been notified.

A boy was knocked to the ground by the strike, which occurred about 3 p.m., but was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital by Kane County Utah Medical Transport, Blair said. The boy was not associated with those killed and was traveling with several adult guardians.

CCSO detectives and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.
