Annual New Year’s plunge is bearable... barely

About three dozen people took a leap of faith New Year’s Day­—faith that they wouldn’t emerge from Lake Powell as peoplesicles­—as part of the annual Polar Bear Plunge.

It was the highest turnout in the 12 years that otherwise sane people have been jumping into the cold lake, according to Paul Ostapuk, who organized the first plunge in 2002.

Originally, the event was to “provide some local entertainment and help market Page and Lake Powell during the slow winter season,” Ostapuk said.

In 2009, Antelope Point Marina adopted it as part of its New Year’s Eve celebration, and this year renamed it the “Steve Ward Memorial Polar Bear Plunge.”

Ward, who died in October, was president of the Friends of Lake Powell.
