Wrestlers grapple with good news/bad news debut

Posted: Wednesday, Nov 28th, 2012

The Sand Devils wrestling team defeated three schools while hosting its Page Multiple Nov. 20, but lost to Coconino in its season opener.

“Our technique was shoddy and we are not in proper condition yet,” said head coach Kyran Keisling. “I expected that though. It’s a long season and our goal is to be peaking at the sectional and state tournaments.  It was difficult having six varsity and 10 junior varsity kids sitting in the stands due to ineligibility. We have the potential to give a tough team like Coco a hard time when we have all the pieces in place instead of getting the snot spanked out of us.”

He said he expects the boys to regain their eligiblity.

Among the highlights of the match, according to Keisling was Julius Descheenie’s 7-6 win over Coconino’s Mica Barker.

“Julius got the monkey off his back by beating for the first time in five tries. Last year he lost four matches to him, all by one point.”

The coach also said Wyman Yellowhair wrestled well.

“Wyman struggled with his takedown technique and it cost him a lot of close matches last year.  He spent all summer working on this aspect of his game and it looks like it is paying off.”

Keisling also lauded the performances of Kenley Nez and Ethan Narada.

After competing in the Kanab Multiple Nov. 27 (after the Chronicle goes to press), the Sand Devils wrestle in the Peaks Invitation Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in Flagstaff.
