Seeing Page through winter eyes

Modified: Thursday, Nov 22nd, 2012

Check out the “New Wave” area across from the south entrance to Wahweap. it has been featured in ads, commercials and the movie “Broken Arrow” with Christian Slater and John Travolta. It is easily accessible and doesn’t need a permit. Photo courtesy of Pat Talbott
Cold weather is upon us and I like to visualize a giant switch that gets flipped. One day we are in T-shirts, shorts and flip flops, then the next it is sweaters, long pants, socks and real shoes.

All the potted plants on the veranda have been brought in and thanks to our friends Agi and Peter, who moved back to California, we have more to keep nice and warm through the winter. I can hardly see out the dining room window.

Winterizing is a word I was not aware of until we moved here. If you have a boat or ever had a water pipe burst from freezing then you know what I mean. This just wasn’t a problem we had back in sunny Venice, Calif.

I remember vividly the first snow I experienced here. Everything was transformed and while it was still snowing I went outside to take photos. A neighbor I hadn’t met yet yelled “You must be from California!” We became fast friends and he would look after our place until we moved here full time. He showed us how to wrap pipes.

Winterizing doesn’t necessarily have to apply to just boats and pipes. We also go through a sort of preparation for cold weather. We get our flu shots, bring out the winter clothing and fuzzy boots, and hunker down with a slow cooker of soup and football on the weekends. And, of course, the holidays are here before we know it.

This time of the year is especially busy for all of us at the Powell Museum. We are getting ready for our 35th Annual Auction/Dinner in the Rainbow Room at the Lake Powell Resort Dec. 1.
