Posted: Thursday, Sep 27th, 2012

Dr. Burt Read Erickson, 91, passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012.

He was born in Clinton, Iowa, and at the age of 21, without hesitation, joined the U.S. Army after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Burt served in one of the most heroic air groups in the Pacific War the 38th Bomb Group, “the Sun Setters.” He often recalled those that gave the ultimate sacrifice and the four years he personally defended freedom in the major campaigns in New Guinea and Okinawa. His contributions to weaponry and to aerial interpretation of terrain from a B-25 yielded promotions from Private to Major.

Following WWII, Burt pursued the life-long dream of becoming a medical doctor. Dr. Erickson graduated from the University of Colorado in 1957 as the oldest member of his class at age 37. Soon he was licensed to practice medicine in 20 states and chose and served Alamosa, Colo. for 22 years. In 1984, Dr. Erickson joined Lake Powell Medical Center in Page and served that community as doctor/surgeon until 2002 when he retired at age 82.

Burt accomplished thousands of successful surgeries and brought more than 3,000 babies into this world. The new Page Medical Center Primary Care Wing is named in his honor.

Burt was a devoted husband to his wife, Emma; a loving father to son, Scott; son, Michael; daughter, Rosanne; daughter, Mary; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He loved handling firearms, hunting, traveling, offroading, being on and near Lake Powell, reading and being with his only true love and best friend Emma.

His caring and thoughtful contributions to his family, friends, profession, patients, church and community will never be forgotten.

A memorial service was held on Sept. 15, 2012, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Page.
