Joy Szabo
PAGE – At the time of print, Page resident Joy Szabo is in Phoenix waiting to go into labor. Treated by doctors in Page during her pregnancy, she is apprehensive about a stranger overseeing her delivery.

Joy opted to have her fourth child at Banner Gateway Hospital in Phoenix so that she could give birth naturally. Her battle against Page Hospital’s new policy against allowing vaginal births after cesareans sparked national attention after her story ran in the Lake Powell Chronicle on Sept. 30.

Claiming that Page Hospital’s chief executive officer had threatened to get a court order if she didn’t comply with the new policy, Joy took her concerns to the hospital’s board of directors. Not willing to be forced into having a medically unnecessary cesarean, Joy sought other birthing options that would allow her to have natural delivery. She found a facility in Phoenix that supports VBAC deliveries.

Since Joy’s story about her battle with Page Hospital first ran, she has been interviewed by CNN, KPNX Channel 12, Ron Reagan, Rachael Ray, and the New York based newspaper called the Daily Beast.
