O Captains! MY CAPTAINS!

Posted: Wednesday, Jan 30th, 2013

(Left to right) Greg Kimes, Dylan Stephens, Cody Fisher, Larthanio Stevens, Claron Alldredge and Zach Taylor graduated Jan. 18 from Zenith Maritime to qualify for U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) captains’ licenses at Antelope Point Marina.
Offered by Capt. J.J. Janssen of J Nautical Ventures, the rigorous 84-hour academic training course tests candidates on seamanship knowledge and skill sets that lead to Merchant Mariner Credentials with the USCG. Federal law requires the operator of a boat carrying paying passengers to hold a captain’s license. Janssen proctors the required USCG exams as part of the training.

Since starting J Nautical Ventures four years ago as a USCG approved instructor, Janssen’s goal has been to establish a base for maritime education on Lake Powell.

“As a full and part-time resident of the Lake Powell region for over 20 years, helping to make Powell safer for boaters and visitors motivates me to conduct this training course here,” he said. “My hope is that providing this education will help raise situational awareness on the water and decrease unnecessary injuries and deaths in this beautiful vacation destination.”

J Nautical Ventures teaches USCG-approved Zenith Maritime curriculum. Zenith Maritime is a USCG-approved maritime training academy. Antelope Point Marina is a USCG-approved training facility.
