Desert View Elementary School opens its doors daily to many students. These students come from town and the outlying areas.
Faculty and staff work diligently to teach academic, emotional and social skills that will provide children, parents and families a foundation for success throughout their experience with us and provide a basis to lead successful lives.
As a new member to the community, I am continually reminded of the support systems provided to Desert View Elementary students and staff through community efforts.
Primary support organizations include Encompass, Page Public Library, City of Page emergency responders, Canyonlands Dentistry and private individual donors.
Encompass provides mental health and medical support to the Page community. Its employees have spent countless hours providing one-on-one student support services to students during instructional time.
These employees support the child in having successful learning experiences with additional feedback, time and help in completing instructional and/or behavioral tasks.
Encompass has worked to support staff and our leadership team by lending an additional hand in our emergency management systems.
We have been working to develop a partnership in facilitating parent, family, and student counseling services. Their leadership team has worked with the Page Unified School District team to discuss ways that our partnership could better support the needs of children and families who struggle accessing services.
Page Public Library has worked with the Desert View Pre-school in conjunction with literacy night. They have provided the literacy night activities with access to costumes and materials. The library also forms as a tutoring center after school. Many of our students retreat to the library afterschool, complete their homework, read books and have access to technology while awaiting family to pick them up and take them home.
City of Page emergency responders have been pivotal in providing care to injured students, transport to medical facilities, and providing support for disruptions. They are quick to respond, caring, understanding and professional.
Canyonlands Dentistry has provided students a brief introduction to dental care and a goodie bag. They also provided dental screening to students and a three month follow-up.
Independent donations have also been provided to the school. One local business has provided $200 for children who have difficulty paying for breakfast or lunch.
Desert View Elementary staff is involved in initiating many of the support systems in the community. When they identify a concern or need for a child or family, the staff member begins the process of allocating supports where needed. The staff member also helps to facilitate the process of the family.
Desert View Elementary school aims to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of all of our students. With the support of our neighbors, community and families, we are provided with a larger framework of professionals, peers, and ideas to help assist children and their families adequately and effectively. These community support systems are an integral piece in the achievement, accomplishment, and success of a community based school. Desert View Elementary School thanks all of the community members, partnerships, and parent volunteers who spend their time helping us to become as effective as possible to meet the varying and dynamic needs of our student population.
Risha VanderWey is principal of Desert View Elementary School.
