Two days before the owners of Navajo Generating Station voted to keep the plant open for close to three more years, Congressman Tom O’Halleran said all he wanted was time.
O’Halleran applauded the decision Monday, saying the choice to extend operations until the end of 2019 was a positive one for Page, the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe.
With the extra time to study and find long-term solutions, O’Halleran said the work is just the beginning.
“I am committed to working toward a long-term solution that includes extending energy production at the Navajo Generating Station,” said O’Halleran. “I will also work with my colleagues to attract businesses and industry to our rural communities and ensure our workers have the tools they need to succeed. Together, we must invest in skills training and education programs for communities who are impacted by ongoing market changes in our energy sector.”
O’Halleran, who took office as District 1 congressman in January, said he has met with SRP and other owners of the plant in his first few months in office.
