Woman wins ultra-marathon in birthday gift to self

Posted: Wednesday, Feb 5th, 2014

Tracy Denbleyker, of Minnesota, has about four miles to go in the Antelope 50 race held Feb. 1 in and around Page.

“We definitely plan on returning to Page,” stated Antelope 50 race promoter, Tim Long. “We love the town, working with the Navajo Nation, and the area—it offers so much.”

The race was a 50-mile ultra-marathon through the scenic canyons and vast deserts of Page and the surrounding area.

The top three finishers were women, with Kandy Ferris, of Orlando, Fla., taking out her competition with a time of 9:42:33.

“It was a fantastic course – out of this world,” stated Ferris who turned 40 two days before the race. “This was my birthday present.”

An avid marathon racer, Ferris said that this was the first time she had ever run 50 miles and added she ended up running 55 miles due to getting lost around the Horshoebend section of the race.

Long stated, “It’s not common to have three women take the top three positions like they did in the 50 miler. What a story.”
