On July 1, I will be retiring.
My career in the newspaper industry began exactly 28 years ago in my hometown in Illinois. I have always enjoyed talking to people, so being a sales rep fit me perfectly. After advancing to the position of sales manager I also learned the “ins and outs” of the business.
A few years later I was named publisher of a weekly newspaper also in Illinois and owed by News Media Corporation.
In 1994 the corporation purchased the Lake Powell Chronicle and named me publisher. I arrived in Page in February and soon became involved with the chamber of commerce, eventually becoming the president of the board and serving in that position for four years.
I also served on the Air Affaire committee until it disbanded in 2001. I was a member of the newly formed Page Substance Abuse Task Force and most recently served as chairperson of the Lake Powell National Golf Course Advisory Board.
The success of the Lake Powell Chronicle has been and will continue to be a team effort. I must say the team in place is one of the best in the industry.
Marty Sisk was at the Chronicle when I arrived taking care of all office functions. Shortly after my arrival, she was trained to do composing. She is now an outstanding graphic artist and provides our customers with award-winning advertisements.
Ed Pease was hired as a sales representative 14 years ago. And everyone who knows Ed knows this was a wise choice for the Chronicle. Ed is one of the most honest, sincere people I know. And I am sure all of his customers will agree with me.
Mike Nation, our driver, has been with us since 2001. Mike always does his job without question. We can rely on Mike to make sure all the carriers, dealers and racks have their papers on time every week.
Tammy Tichinel took over the reins in our front office in 2006. Since then our billing, deposits, line classified ads and all office related responsibilities have been carried out in an organized, efficient manner — even though she sometimes uses too much scotch tape!
Michael Rinker came to the Chronicle to fill the editor’s position in October 2011. It is a pleasure to have an editor with a sense of humor and a dedication to the job. Michael is not only a great editor but also is a very caring person.
The new kid on the block, Lawrence Baker, joined our staff the end of May. What a breath of fresh air. Lawrence has brought enthusiasm and a new energy to our team.
I will miss each and every one of my staff, as they have not only been employees, but more importantly, my friends.
I wish Jeanie Wright, the new Lake Powell Chronicle publisher, all the best. She will be a great asset to the community.
Mid-July I will be returning to my hometown in Illinois. I am looking forward to playing a lot of golf, fishing and spending time with my family.
I will miss Page and the beauty of the lake, mesas and rocks. This is certainly one of the most spectacular places on earth. I will always have a warm spot in my heart for the friends I have made here.
