Mike McKinley Reid was born Sept. 29, 1940 in Fairfax, Okla., to Billie James Corbett and Walker Blackbird McKinley. He was baptized as Michael Stanley McKinley. He passed away Dec. 17, 2012 in Oklahoma City, at the age of 72 years, 2 months and 18 days.
Mike’s father was killed in World War II. He moved to Hillsboro, N.M., to live with his grandma in 1947. Mike’s mother soon followed and married a local rancher, Don Reid, who adopted him. He grew up on ranches on the Black Range of southwest New Mexico. Mike graduated from Hot Springs High School in Truth or Consequences, N.M., in 1960. He served his country during the Vietnam Conflict as a jet engine mechanic from 1960 to 1965 in California. He was married to Freda Lea Teston in Truth or Consequences and to that union was born, Michael, Chris, Shawn and Nicole. Mike moved to Kayenta, Ariz. where he was a foreman for Peabody Coal. He was married to Virginia Sue (Flesher) at Kayenta on March 24, 1972. To that union was born Robin Lynn. They lived in northern Arizona for 31 years before moving to Elk City in 2004 for their retirement. Mike was a proud member of the Osage Nation. He was currently a member of the Gray Horse Committee and the Osage Gourd Clan. Mike and Virginia traveled throughout the world. He was looking forward to making the trip with the Elk City High School Band to San Diego after Christmas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Charlene Vance, and 1 nephew, Mikel Travis Vance.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; 3 sons, Michael James Reid, Las Cruces, N.M., Christopher Lee Reid and wife Shawna, Aztec, N.M., Shawn Darin Reid and wife, Charlotte, Las Cruces; 2 daughters, Shannon Nicole Reid, Aztec; and Robin Lynn Marquis, Elk City, Okla.; 12 grandchildren, Jacob Daniel Reid and wife, Jenna, Molly Katherine Reid, Cori Nicole Reid, Chantal Villescas, Mitchell Stanley Reid, Bradley Lane Martin, Bonnie Leigh Reid, Chelsie Rai Reid, McKinzie Lane Reid, Tarryn-Jade Orion Marquis, Sara Beth Reid, Shelby-Ann Canyon Marquis; 3 great grandchildren, Jesse Winkel, Elijah Winkel, Samantha Reid; his mother-in-law, Gertrude Flesher, Cheyenne, Okla.; his brother-in-law, Jim Flesher and wife, Beverly, Stillwater, Okla.; and a host of relatives and friends.
There was service at the Gray Horse Chapel in Fairfax, Okla. on Dec. 20. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, December 22, 2012 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Elk City officiated by Father Lourdu Ponnapati.
