Sand Devils boys, girls make sectionals

Modified: Sunday, Feb 9th, 2014

Natasha Henry and her Lady Sand Devils teammates will be reaching for a championship as the top seed in the Division III Section I tournament this week.
In the wake of dominating wins in their regular-season finales Feb. 7, both Page High basketball teams have qualified for their respective sectional tournaments, according to the Arizona Interscholastic Association.

The girls defeated visiting Hopi High, 63-12, to finish with a 13-0 record in their section. As the top seed they’ll play #4 Tuba City Feb. 11 at Chinle. In the other game, #2 Many Farms will face #3 Window Rock. The winners will play for the Division III Section 1 championship Feb. 15.

The Lady Sand Devils are ranked fourth in Division III.

Meanwhile, the boys, who coasted to a 58-30 win over Hopi, are seeded third in the sectional tourney and will play #2 Tuba City on Feb. 12 at Chinle. The Devils lost two of three games to the Warriors this season, including one in the NGS Holiday Tournament.

In the other sectional game, #1 Chinle plays #4 Monument Valley.

The winners play for the section championship Feb. 15 at Chinle.

The girls are a virtual lock for the state tournament, while the boys—ranked 12th in the state—also should make it easily. Section champions are guaranteed a high seed and first-round bye.

[UPDATE: The Division III boys' rankings were updated at 9 p.m. on Feb. 8 and Page dropped to 14th.]
