PHS soccer’s unexpected endings; city softball signup

Posted: Wednesday, Jan 29th, 2014

Braedyn Boldin, shown in an earlier match, scored three goals against Valley Lutheran.
The boys and girls soccer teams completed their seasons with a bang and a whimper.

And the source of both endings was Valley Lutheran.

The boys, after losing 7-1 at Sedona Red Rock on Jan. 24—they also lost to the Scorpions, 8-1, three days earlier—were scheduled to return home to play Valley Lutheran the following day.

However, the Phoenix school cancelled the match, which was also slated to be Senior Day for the Sand Devils.

The forfeit left Page with a record of 4-13-1, according to maxpreps.com.

The Lady Sand Devils finished their season on a more upbeat note, defeating visiting Sedona Red Rock, 5-1, on Jan. 24.

The next day they faced Valley Lutheran and scored 17 goals—a school record, the Arizona Daily Sun reported.

Page finished the season 7-13, according to maxpreps.com.

Page and northern Arizona McDonald’s restaurants are offering a “buy one get one free” Egg White Delight McMuffin Feb. 8 to customers wearing soccer jerseys as part of McDonald’s “Soccer Jersey Day” promotion.

Since 2011, McDonald’s has helped raise $40,000 through its Soccer Saturday event for the Arizona Youth Soccer Association, Arizona’s largest youth soccer organization (www.azyouthsoccer.org). The funds benefit registration scholarships for thousands of youth soccer players in need.

“We at McDonald’s understand the important role soccer plays in the lives of our customers, especially young families and children,” said Abe Martinez Jr., owner of the Page McDonald’s. “Soccer Jersey Day is an opportunity for customers to showcase their passion for soccer and to start the day with a wholesome breakfast.”
