Home cooking helps boys even record

After a season opening loss at Chinle, the Sand Devils returned to Page High gym Nov. 26 and thanks in large part to an aggressive defensive effort, were able to get on the winning track against Red Mesa, 55-18.

“I think the biggest difference is we played under control, didn’t turn the ball over and played good defense,” said head coach David Vespignani. “Also, Chinle was much better than Red Mesa.”

The Devils wasted no time, as Jamaal Thomas scored on a layup of the opening tap and Roger Sandall also hit a layup at the end of a fastbreak just seconds later. Thomas added a three-pointer to put Page up 9-2. They would extend their lead to 16-5 by the end of first quarter.

Thomas, a sophomore guard, however, would foul out of the game just a couple of minutes into the second quarter. He left with five points.

Ammon Secody led Page with eight points, including four of five field goals, his only miss a three-pointer.

But the Devils were nothing if not balanced. Sandall, Dillon Nockideneh, Michael Redbear, Carson Wright, Michael Becerra and Arvis Fowler all scored six points.

Redbear came out the halftime locker room on fire, hitting two jumpers, making three steals and dishing two assists in the first couple of minutes of the third quarter.

The Devils were up 36-10 when Red Mesa called timeout with 5:21 left in the quarter.

Vespignani emptied his bench in the fourth quarter as Page extended its lead to more than 30 points, triggering the mercy rule under which the game clock continued to run even when the ball was not in play.

In their 69-46 loss at Chinle Nov. 20, the Devils were led by Wright’s 11 points and Thomas’s nine.

Next up for the boys is the Sedona Invitational, Nov. 29-Dec. 1. After a trip to Tuba City Dec. 4 to play Greyhills, the Devils return home to host the NGS Classic, Dec. 6-8.
