Ember Sloan, shown here against Greyhills, had 27 kills in the Sand Devils' doubleheader home win over Chinle Sept. 22.
Sand Devils volleyball swept a doubleheader from Chinle Sept. 22 at the Page High gym.
The much-needed wins came one week after the Devils finished fourth of four teams at the Page Invitational.
In between, they dropped an excruciating home match to Greyhills Academy on Sept. 20 in games that went down to the wire.
The Fighting Knights won the first two games 29-27 and 29-25, before Page rallied for a 27-25 win in the third. But Greyhills clinched the match with a 25-21 victory.
Two days later, however, the Sand Devils took the opening match of the doubleheader, 3-1, thanks to Kyla Yazzie’s 36 assists and Ember Sloan’s 15 kills. Ailaina Herman had 15 good digs.
Braedyn Boldin had eight kills and Tiara Collins had seven.
The Devils won the first game in the opening match, 25-16, but the Wildcats bounced back to take the second, 25-19.
But Page closed out the match, winning the final two games, 25-15 and 25-10.
In the second match of the doubleheader, the visiting Wildcats took the first game 25-18.
The Sand Devils, however, swept the last three 25-12, 25-12 and 25-20.
They were led by Sloan’s 12 kills, Bolden’s seven and Collins’ nine.
Herman had 18 digs and Yazzie 33 assists.
“We are playing much better the more playing time we get,” head coach Delphina Yazzie said.
She noted that Ember Sloan was selected to the all-tournament team for the Page Invitational.
The Sand Devils travel to Utah for their next match, Sept. 26 against Pine View (St. George), then return home to play Tuba City on Oct. 2. The varsity match starts at 6 p.m.
