Thinclads prepare for state meet as baseball, softball fall in playoffs

In the wake of first- and second-place finishes, respectively, in the Page Last Chance meet May 5, the Sand Devils boys and girls track teams are sending a number of athletes to the Arizona Division III state championships.

Meanwhile, the softball team lost its first-round playoff game to Tuba City, 11-4, on May 2, and the baseball team lost 9-1 to Tombstone the previous day.

In the Last Chance meet, which featured teams from nine schools, the Devils had three double-winners:

Freshman Jason Moore took the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash, Logan Hill won the long jump and triple jump.

Alexis Smith won the discus and shot put; teammate Danielle Stevens was runnerup in both.

Other winners were Jeffrey Miller (1600 meters), Paden James (high jump), Julius Descheenie (pole vault), Jayde Secody (1600 meters) and Braedyn Boldin (triple jump).

As for the state championships, scheduled May 10 and 12 at Mesa Community College, 11 Sand Devils and a realy teamqualified. An athlete can qualify either by meeting a predetermined time, distance or height, or by having a top 24 time, distance or height among Division III competitors.

The boys 4x800 meter relay team had Page’s highest ranking, running the second-best time this season.

Five Devils qualified in two events each: Smith and Stevens in the discus and shot put; Hill in the long jump and triple jump; Nicolette Coleman in the 3200 and 1600; and Curley in the 1600 and 800.

Other qualifiers are Michael Russell and Miller (1600), Shawn Secody (800), Kyran Brown (3200), James (high jump), and Boldin (triple jump).
