A combined team, Sacred Hoops, with players from Flagstaff, Tuba City and Page played in the Channing Frye Invitational Basketball Tournament at Grand Canyon University on July 10 and July 11. The team played in the 13 and under boys division which had nine teams total. The team took home the Channing Frye Invitational Basketball Tournament Championship by winning four games and losing one. They beat the Jayhawks and lost to the Timberwolves in Saturday’s pool play; they were later seeded sixth on the bracket for Sunday’s games. In the first game, Sacred Hoops played and were victorious over the Timberwolves the second time around, and then moved on to beat Skyline in the semifinals. Then came the championship game against Frye’s Bulldogs, and Sacred Hoops (all Diné players) defeated the Bulldogs for the championship. The team includes coaches Jayson Begody and Art Singer, players Garrison Williams, Jamal Thomas, Aram Redking and Wilyiote Yazzie of Page, A.J. Singer and Tristan Nez of Flagstaff, and Christen Begody, Brenton Goldtooth, Roger Foster and Tyler Johnson of Tuba City.
